The Spanish motorcycling has made history today at the Italian Grand Prix. Seven Spanish riders have managed to be in the front row of the grid in MotoGP and have achieved a hat-trick with Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Barbera in the top three positions.

This is a unique result in the history of Spanish motorcycling proving again that it is in excellent shape.

The new Moto3™ category debuted on day one at Losail as a new era in the World Championship began, and it was last year’s 125cc Rookie of the Year Maverick Viñales (Blusens Avintia) who was the leading rider in both sessions.

Viñales topped the second practice session – in which all riders set their best time – with a time of 2’08.160, which left him 0.498s clear of second place, as the talented young Spaniard set a scorching marker for the rest of the field.

Malaysian rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin (Airasia-SIC-Ajo) led the charge behind Viñales with a time of 2’08.658, with Red Bull KTM Ajo rider Danny Kent putting a problematic first session behind him in which he had technical issues to time in third quickest at 2’08.967.

99 – Spain have taken 99 victories in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing. Eighty five of these wins have been in the 250cc class and fourteen in Moto2.

38 – Great rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa have both won 38 Grand Prix races across all three classes.

25 – Julian Simon celebrates his 25th birthday on the Tuesday before the Qatar Grand Prix weekend.

19 – Czech Moto3 rider Jakub Kornfeil celebrates his 19th birthday on the Sunday at the Qatar Grand Prix.

A new era begins at the 2012 Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar with the debut of Moto3™, the 250cc four-stroke bikes brought in to replace the former 125cc machines which had been a part of the World Championship since its beginnings in 1949. The pre-season has hinted at an exciting new generation of machinery and an intense level of competition, with 32 riders competing for the honour of being crowned the first-ever Moto3™ World Champion.

A core of riders will be labelled as favourites following their exploits in both the 125s and pre-season, with the likes of Maverick Viñales (Blusens Avintia), Sandro Cortese (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Héctor Faubel (Bankia Aspar) being three such names. All Grand Prix winners, the trio will be accompanied by a number of promising talents in trying to start the season with a strong result in Qatar.

Over 11,000 spectators witnessed the start of the CEV Buckler championships in weather condition so unpredictable that the teams and tyre manufactures where kept on their toes for the whole day. Wet or dry tyre choices could mean scoring points or not. Despite these changeable weather conditions, that created a lot of doubt on their choice of tyre, this weekend saw spectacular racing in all categories.

In the Moto3TM class, Pole setter, German rider Philipp Ottl, who had been consistent all weekend, lead the race from the start but had to fight hard for a win against his main rival, Alejandro Medina who had started second on the grid behind him. Medina chased the spray of Ottl right up to the checkered flag. Eventually he secured second ahead of Briton John McPhee, who scored third on the podium to take the bronze.

British Moto3 rider Danny Kent may have got Moto3 pre-season testing wrapped up, but on Thursday he had to take another test: his Compulsory Basic Training to allow him to ride on British roads.

In between racing in the Moto3 series which kicks off in Qatar on April 8, Danny will use his 125 Duke to travel to the gym and to see friends but will have to keep the L plates on until he completes his full test later in the year.

Team San Carlo Honda Gresini today unveiled its new livery for the 2012 MotoGP, CRT and Moto3 campaigns in the fitting surroundings of the wind tunnel at Milan Polytechnic. It is an ambitious joint programme that the team have labelled “Technology and Passion,” as Alberto Vitaloni and Fausto Gresini continue their wonderful adventure together with their own brand of dynamism and enthusiasm, based around the fundamentals of the present and the future of motorcycle racing. Represented by Alvaro Bautista and the Honda RC213V in MotoGP, Michele Pirro and his Honda CBR1000 RR powered FTR in the new CRT class and young Niccolò Antonelli on the Honda NSF250R in Moto3, San Carlo and Gresini continue their mission to cultivate passion and talent for motorcycling within Italy. At the end of a long day, the students of the Milan Polytechnic were able to meet the team in the true spirit of their “Technology and Passion” motto.
