Despite a negative weather forecast, the final day of the Sepang test was the only one of the three not affected by rain. Valentino Rossi stayed on the track until the last minute in order to complete as much work as possible for the Ducati engineers, who continue working on the development of the GP12. As for Nicky Hayden, despite still not being in perfect physical condition, he continued testing into the afternoon, and on his very last exit, he had a harmless low-speed fall in Turn 1.

Both riders found the new electronics that were introduced at this test to be a breakthrough, although they didn’t find the ideal setup for improving their lap times and ended the day in tenth and eleventh positions. Still, they both reduced their gap to the front considerably compared to the first test.

The next winter test is scheduled for March 23-25 at the Spanish Jerez circuit.

Following the first winter test at Sepang, where his participation was limited due to his left shoulder lacking the strength to ride well, Nicky Hayden traveled directly to Fremont, California, for a thorough examination at Doctor Arthur Ting’s clinic. There, tests revealed damage to cartilage in the American’s shoulder, as well as to muscles in his back. Tomorrow the Ducati Team rider will undergo an operation in order to have his condition evaluated more thoroughly, and to treat his injuries.
The 2012 MotoGP test season started with today’s first day of a three-day test at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit. The Ducati Team took to the track with its Desmosedici GP12, and after official test rider Franco Battaini carried out the shakedown, Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden started the important work of finding a base setup.
Ducati Corse Technical Director Filippo Preziosi followed the team’s work from the garage. Last night’s rainfall resulted in a damp track surface this morning, delaying the team’s start until around midday. Valentino Rossi and his team progressed step by step, improving the lap time in each outing before finishing with the fifth-fastest time, .735 seconds behind that of Jorge Lorenzo. Nicky Hayden also began working on the GP12’s setup, although his physical condition was still affected by the injury to his left scapula. The American finished the day tenth, having completed 25 laps.

Czech motorcycle rider Karel Abraham will ride with more powerful and faster bike in his second season in the MotoGP class. The new Ducati Desmosedici GP12 is powered by four-stroke 1000 ccm engine with four cylinders and power of 250HP, which allows maximum speed of 360 km per hour.

Comparing to the last year’s model, the new bike has completely modified concept. For example, carbon chassis is replaced by deltabox aluminium frame. „At first glance it may appear that the bike is similar to the last year’s model, but under the fairing is a series of significant changes,” says crew chief of Cardion AB Motoracing Marco Grana, who spent two weeks in Bologna with his colleagues from the Czech team.

Also the external part of the bike is slightly modified, but the design is still based on a combination of blue and white colors. „In 2012 we decided to return to the blue color a little bit, but I think that our bike will be still well recognizable,“ continues Karel Abraham. Atypical wings, which he used on the fairing of his bike in 2011 to increase the pressure on the front wheel, will disappear this year.

Most of the components on the new bike are from the same manufacturer as last year. Suspension of Abraham’s bike is provided by Öhlins while the brakes are from Brembo. All teams from the premier class use Bridgestone tyres. „I tried the new bike during the post-season test in Valencia, but the first real test will be held at Sepang in Malaysia at the end of January. We need to be well prepared for the first test because we want to try a lot of things. We also must work on the set-up of the bike because the 2012 MotoGP season kicks off in Qatar on April 8th,“ added Karel Abraham.

According to the provisional entry list for the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, the Cardion AB Motoracing rider will compete against eleven bikes from Ducati, Honda and Yamaha. Other nine positions on the grid will be filled by CRT teams using bikes based on serial machines. Between many rookies are also Abraham’s old friends from the Moto2 class, for example reigning Moto2 world champion Stefan Bradl. „Thanks to the increased number of riders, the MotoGP will be more attractive for spectators and for us. It’s great that I will ride against my old rivals and friends, but I’m concetrating on my goal – be on the front positions as much as possible, regardless the factory machines or a CRT bikes.“

Madonna di Campiglio’s frozen lake once again provided the perfect stage for a spectacular finish to the Wrooom Press Ski Meeting. Valentino Rossi, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella and Marc Genè were the stars of the kart and Fiat 500 races that wowed the large crowd that had gathered to greet the Ducati riders and Ferrari drivers. Nicky Hayden, still recovering from an injury, voluntarily gave up his driver’s seat to “Uccio” Salucci, Valentino’s friend and collaborator. Valentino won the kart race and finished second in the car race, behind Felipe Massa and ahead of Fernando Alonso.
“It was really fantastic,” Valentino said afterward. “I practice a lot with karts in the summer, and it was great to drive on the ice, especially because it was much colder this time than it was last year, so the track held up well. Felipe (Massa) was faster than I was, but anyway, it was a great night. I enjoyed myself.”
